{"id":24,"date":"2011-04-04T09:06:31","date_gmt":"2011-04-04T14:06:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uptimerobot.com\/blog\/?p=24"},"modified":"2025-11-13T15:09:23","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T15:09:23","slug":"new-feature-monitoring-ports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uptimerobot.com\/blog\/new-feature-monitoring-ports\/","title":{"rendered":"New Feature &#8211; Monitoring Ports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here comes a &#8220;frequently requested feature&#8221;: <strong>Monitoring Ports<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uptime Robot now enables you to monitor any port\/service<\/strong> (like HTTP, FTP, DNS, SMTP, POP, IMAP, etc.) and find out if they are responding or not.<\/p>\n<p>Under the re-organized &#8220;Add New Monitor&#8221; menu, the feature can be reached by simply selecting &#8220;TCP Ports&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>After that, <strong>Uptime Robot<\/strong> will be displaying a list of pre-defined\/popular ports and the <strong>ability to define a custom port<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are usually 2 status options while monitoring a service, it can be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>up<\/li>\n<li>or down<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, there is a 3rd option from <strong>Uptime Robot<\/strong>&#8216;s point of view: it can also be filtered\/firewalled. Simply, it can be up or down but the status can not be detected as any requests (like <strong>Uptime Robot<\/strong> does) are blocked.<\/p>\n<p>Good news is; if the port\/service is behind a firewall and blocks any requests, inside the &#8220;down&#8221; e-mail notification, you&#8217;ll see that <strong>Uptime Robot<\/strong> mentions this information.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you have the chance of whitelisting IPs that can reach to the port.
