Fastly is degraded. Is your product working?

An incident on their side does not always mean an outage on yours, and the only way to know is to already be watching your own endpoints. Set that up in under a minute and you will be notified the next time your own site is affected. And there will be a next time.

What happened?

Fastly's status page opened an incident at 00:35 UTC titled "Elevated Errors for API & Configuration Management", covering three listed components: API & Configuration Management, API Services, and Configuration Management Services. The first update said Fastly was investigating elevated errors and latency to the API and Configuration Management system, and specified that all other products and services were unaffected. At 00:42 UTC Fastly said its engineers believed they had identified a contributing factor and were developing a fix, again noting the rest of the platform was untouched. At 00:44 UTC Fastly reported a gradual recovery and said it would keep monitoring until customer and end user experience was fully restored. No further update followed, and the incident closed out at 23 minutes total. No cause was ever named beyond "a contributing factor", so the actual trigger is not on the record. No user reports were filed during the window. This was the only incident logged for Fastly on this day, and Fastly's own history shows 17 incidents in the past 90 days with a median duration of 9 hours 28 minutes, which makes this one short by Fastly's own pattern.

Learning

UptimeRobot's own probes watched the api-control component from EU and NA regions through this window and recorded 100% uptime across 24 hours, 7 days and 30 days, with this incident not registered against that check. That is not a contradiction. Fastly's incident was scoped to its API and configuration management layer, the systems you use to change settings and push config, not to the content delivery path that external uptime checks against a live endpoint would typically exercise. A probe hitting your delivery edge can stay green while the control plane behind it throws errors, because the two layers fail independently. If your product relies on Fastly's API to push purges, update VCL or rotate certificates during a window like this, your monitoring of your own endpoints would show nothing wrong even as those calls failed on Fastly's side. That is exactly the kind of gap a status page incident fills in after the fact, assuming the vendor files one. Your monitoring covers your half, UptimeRobot now watches the provider's half too, so next time you know which side broke without guessing.
